MARANA – The towns of Marana and Oro Valley have been honored with the prestigious Governor's Tourism Award for Best Tourism Partnership by the Arizona Office of Tourism (AOT). This award recognizes their collaborative efforts in promoting Northern Pima County as a premier cycling destination, particularly through sharing hosting duties for the Tucson Bicycle Classic and Project Echelon Grand Fondo Ride.
This recognition highlights the successful partnership between Marana and Oro Valley, which began in 2022 when Oro Valley joined as a stage host for the Tucson Bicycle Classic. Building on that success, the event was expanded to include Marana, creating a unified regional experience that has since become a cornerstone of cycling tourism in the area.
A Shared Vision for Cycling Tourism
The collaboration between the Town of Oro Valley and Discover Marana (the official Destination Marketing Organization for the Town of Marana) was driven by a shared vision to establish Northern Pima County as a leading destination for cycling enthusiasts. By hosting quality events like the Tucson Bicycle Classic and Project Echelon Grand Fondo Ride—an event that honors and supports veterans—this vision has been realized. These events have attracted cyclists from across the country, boosting local tourism and economic development.
Leadership and Community Engagement
The success of these initiatives was made possible by the concerted efforts of both towns in securing permits, supporting marketing campaigns, and partnering with international cycling influencers to showcase the region’s unique appeal.
"We greatly appreciate Oro Valley for bringing the idea of expanding the Tucson Bicycle Classic into Marana," said Stefanie Boe, Town of Marana Tourism Manager. "Hosting such a world-class event benefits our local economy, from hotels to small businesses, and enhances the overall community experience. We look forward to continuing our partnership to further highlight cycling in Northern Pima County."
“Our partnership with Marana has not only elevated the profile of cycling in our region but also fostered a stronger sense of community and economic vitality,” said Paul Melcher, Community and Economic Development Director for the Town of Oro Valley. “We’re excited to continue this collaboration to bring more events and visitors to Northern Pima County.”
Impact on Tourism and Economic Development
The partnership between Marana and Oro Valley has proven to be a powerful driver of tourism and economic growth in Northern Pima County. The Tucson Bicycle Classic and other cycling events have not only drawn thousands of visitors to the area but also showcased the natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities that both towns offer.
The collaborative approach taken by Marana and Oro Valley has resulted in enhanced visibility for the region, a stronger sense of community, and increased economic activity. The success of these events underscores the importance of regional cooperation in promoting tourism and creating memorable experiences for visitors.
