MARANA- The Marana Police Department (MPD) partnered with the Parks and Recreation Department to practice life-saving CPR and AED skills.
MPD reached out to Parks & Recreation to help them train its officers over the month of September and the first week of October for their Advanced Officer Training session. Aquatics Supervisor Kevin Goodrich and Recreation Programmer Allison Rock led the training sessions. The training involved lessons in the classroom, practical exercises, and scenario exercises held at the Marana Pool.
Goodrich and Rock dedicated more than 30 hours of preparation and classroom training between August and October. They provided proficiency hours to 75 Marana Police Officers in CPR.
Goodrich said it is important to point out the difference in when compression-only CPR can be used and will be used versus traditional CPR, using compressions combined with giving breaths.
“The biggest difference is that in a drowning emergency, or a choking emergency or anything involving an infant or a child, you do want to make sure that you’re giving oxygen and you’re giving breaths with your compressions,” said Marana Aquatics Supervisor Kevin Goodrich.
“This has helped us out as far as responding to medical emergency calls. We want to make sure that as first responders that we respond to medical calls just as much as we respond to criminal activity calls and to make sure that we provide the best medical care to the citizens of Marana as Marana Police Officers respond to these calls of service,” said Sergeant Neil Jordan with the Marana Police Department.
