MPD traffic unit patrols school zones on August 11, 2022
MARANA- The Marana Police Department is wrapping up a week of increased school zone patrols in cooperation with the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
The officers working with the Back to School Deployment have conducted 102 traffic stops which resulted in 32 citations. These were traffic stops that were funded by grant money from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. Officers have increased patrols in school zones as students head back to class this week.
The traffic unit also made an additional 73 traffic stops for the period of August 8th through August 11th. Patrol officers conducted an additional 8 stops. These stops were not funded by the grant. Traffic stops this year are up from the previous year. Last year, police stopped 155 drivers in the first two weeks of the school year. So far this week, officers have made 183 traffic stops.
“Part of the purpose of the deployments we have is to ensure that we’re educating the public on the signs and also having our visibility known to ensure that people are obeying the traffic laws and driving carefully through our school zones,” said Officer Brian Neuman, with the Marana Police Department. “Our goal isn’t out here for the purpose of giving tickets…there’s no revenue generation purpose of writing citations. Sometimes violations warrant citations, sometimes they just really warrant educating people on the laws and reminding them the speeds they need to be at and the rules they need to follow to operate safely.”
Although the increased school zone enforcement will be ending on Friday, August 12th, the MPD traffic and Patrol Units will continue to enforce traffic laws in school zones for the remainder of the school year.
